A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
