Alleged Stalker Questioned: 'But What If I Might Be Madeleine?'
A individual indicted with harassing Kate McCann apparently recorded her a recorded message which posed: "suppose I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, twenty-four, who a jury heard has consistently asserted she was the vanished Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are standing trial charged with pursuing Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February 2025.
On Monday, the tribunal learned phone records and evidence retrieved from phones logged Ms Wandelt consistently requesting Madeleine's mother for a DNA test over that period.
Madeleine's disappearance in 2007 - when she was three years old during a trip in Portugal - is considered the most widely reported investigations and remains open.
'I Don't Want Money'
Another phone message, presented in court, recorded Ms Wandelt saying: "I know I'm heavy and plain like Madeleine used to be, but I know what I believe."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's recordings with Mrs McCann's answerphone expressed: "Suppose there is a tiny probability that I am Madeleine? What happens next? Is that not important for you?"
"I am not seeking money, I have a living here in Poland, I only wish to know," the recording stated.
The panel was informed that through electronic messages, text messages and calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a DNA test, forwarded youth pictures to her phone in a effort to show a similarity to Mrs McCann's disappeared daughter, and asserted to have "memories" from a childhood with the McCanns.
Robert Jones, a data specialist with law enforcement who compiled the data, informed the court there "seemed to lack any responses" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt additionally contacted close associates of the McCanns, as per the phone records.
On 9 October 2024, Gerry McCann responded to a phone call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, stating she had "the wrong phone."
During that incident Ms Wandelt left a message on Mrs McCann's answerphone stating "I won't give up and I will prove my claim."
The court was informed Mrs Spragg struck up a connection through digital means with Ms Wandelt preceding joining her on a visit to the McCanns' property in that area in last December.
Communication data revealed Mrs Spragg had reached out using messaging service to Mrs McCann to say the media had characterized Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she should be considered genuine in the time leading up to the trip to that location, that area, in that winter.
The court heard communications between the two individuals, in November 2024, considering trying to get Mrs McCann's genetic material from her bins or from utensils at a dining venue.
"We have to take action," the co-defendant informed Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the trip to their home, the defendant transmitted a communication which stated: "We're currently sat adjacent to the McCanns' home with our headlights off similar to private investigators. I wanted to do this with Peter Andrew I hadn't anticipated I would be involved in this with the McCanns."
The proceedings continues.
