Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials voiced anger after the ex-president charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and punished "with execution" following their release of a controversial video.

The Message That Triggered the Controversy

The video footage, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly acted in military or intelligence roles.

"As we did, you all took an pledge to protect and support this national charter," the lawmakers affirmed in the 90-second video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can reject unlawful commands, you should decline improper directives. No one has to follow commands that contravene the law or our national charter."

Trump's Incensed Response

The recorded statement reportedly trigger a furious reply from the ex-president.

On the following morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he stated: "This constitutes really bad, and Harmful to our United States. Their statements cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Leaders Answer

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a unified announcement condemning the comments.

"Violent politics has no role in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all worked our nation with exceptional loyalty and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."

The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the protection of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme digital publications and withdraw his aggressive discourse before he causes harm," the declaration added.

Lawmakers' Strong Response

The representatives who appeared in the video also released a statement.

"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who value this United States and made an pledge to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to keep it. No intimidation, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that important obligation."

"The significant point is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their support as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."

They added: "The entire nation must unite and censure the ex-president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."

More Governmental Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and posted on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."

He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and absolutely."

The GOP leader defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."

The Republican leader also according to sources told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and determine all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary responded: "No."

"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the spokesperson said. "There are current representatives of the federal government who worked together to arrange a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the executive's proper directives."

She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can result in casualties, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially supporting."
