Eurovision Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An recent term emerged a couple of months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is specific to Gaza, as stated by health professionals like child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for medical staff to care for a child who has seen the death of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that genocidal acts are still being committed. Authorities disputes these claims, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, it seems, is what global togetherness looks like.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
