Food Benefits Set to Cease for Over 40 Million Throughout Prolonged Government Closure

Federal agriculture authorities declared recently that monthly food benefits under one of the country’s largest support systems won't be issued next month because of the continuing federal government shutdown.

Shutdown Extends Through Its Third Week

The federal closure lasted its 25th day when the announcement was made, coming after demands from hundreds of Democratic representatives asking the USDA to tap into reserve accounts to cover the upcoming nutrition payments.

“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” the USDA stated. “At this time, there will be no benefits issued” on 1 November.

Millions Affected

Over 40 million Americans count on the regular assistance, per federal data. Various areas, like one southwestern state, dependence on this assistance affects one-fifth of the population.

A memo obtained by a major news agency showed that USDA officials decided against using emergency reserves for November food benefits.

Political Stalemate

Congressional leaders continue to disagree over how to support and resume federal agencies.

Remarks from the director at a prominent policy organization suggested that the White House could have acted to prepare in advance to ensure continuous assistance.

“It could have, and should have taken steps earlier to make arrangements to use these funds,” the statement continued. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” as conservative leaders work to influence Democratic senators to approve a funding package that would reopen the federal government.

States Prepare

Governors in multiple regions issued emergency declarations this week to make money available to address food insecurity preparing for food benefits expiring during the upcoming period.
