Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
Summers announced he would step back from public roles after Congressional panel made public his repeated correspondence with Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at OpenAI, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

He stated in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and look forward observing their progress".

Summers, who once led the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed messages revealed that the economist exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the AI firm said it accepted the economist's choice to resign.

"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the Board," the company stated.

Legislative Background

This announcement follows after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to approve a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to release its files on Epstein.

The legislation will then proceed to the office of President Trump for endorsement. The President has said he plans to sign the bill, after reversing his stance on the matter following pressure from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A group of Epstein-related emails made public by the Congressional committee days ago referenced numerous well-known personalities in the financier's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The emails revealed that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often trying to connect Summers to influential global figures.

Personal Response

After the messages were shared with the public, Summers expressed he took "total ownership for my poor judgment to persist in communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he desired "to reestablish trust and fix connections with the persons closest to me".

Career Background

Summers served in leadership roles under party leaders; acting as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties previously on Monday, he said he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following his declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in DC where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that he was not affiliated with the institution.

The former official entered the leadership of the AI company, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
