Jennifer Lawrence Says Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Worsen the Situation’ Dividing the Nation Apart

The star has revealed that she no longer feels fitting to voice opinions regarding the Trump government, concerned it could exacerbate divisive discussions and deepen rifts across the country.

‘I’m Unsure If It’s Wise’, Says Lawrence

During a discussion, the Oscar winner reflected, “When Trump was first in office, I believed I was moving hastily like a chicken with my head cut off. But experience has shown, over multiple voting cycles, celebrities have no real impact whatsoever on who people vote for.”

She continued, “So then what am I doing? I’m just voicing my thoughts on something that’s going to heighten conflict dividing the country apart.”

Changing Allegiances

The actress has spoken candidly about supporting Republican and Democratic candidates over the years. Raised by a right-leaning family in her home state, she voted for the Republican nominee in the 2008 election then moving to the Democrats and revealing she recognized during President Obama’s term that backing conservatives was voting against her personal freedoms as a female citizen.

Past Statements

In 2015, she stated that a Trump victory would be “a catastrophic event” and publicly supported Joe Biden in the 2020 election. In the latest campaign, she lent her support to the Democratic nominee, “as I think she’s a strong contender and I trust that she will take all necessary steps to defend abortion access.”

Industry Position

Lawrence was aligned with numerous celebrities in her opposition to Trump as a presidential contender, but the limited influence stars have over the voting intentions was highlighted by the outcome.

“This upcoming term appears changed,” noted she regarding his administration. “As he stated his intentions. We were aware of his actions for the previous administration. He was very clear. And voters made that decision.”

Current Projects

Lawrence is discussing Die, My Love, the filmmaker’s movie in which she stars as a recent parent who deals with her psychological well-being in the countryside. At a media event for the film in the film festival, Lawrence spoke about the conflict in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s mortifying. What’s taking place is equivalent to a genocide and it’s terrible.”

Broader Concerns

She continued by expressing that she was disappointed by “the lack of civility in the discourse of U.S. political debates right now and how that is going to be normalised to the kids now. It’s going to be typical to them that elected officials deceive.”

She attempted to refocus anger about the situation to policymakers rather than celebrities. “Concentrate on the people in charge,” she advised, in what many took to be a nod to the then-recent pledge supported by more than 4,000 arts community members to boycott Israeli film institutions.

Personal Connections

The actor, who won an Oscar aged 22 for her performance in her breakout movie, is attracting awards attention for her performance in the new film. Although Lynne Ramsay has rejected the story being understood as one of maternal mental health issues and mental illness, Lawrence revealed that she did relate to elements of her character’s journey after the delivery of her youngest child, shortly after filming concluded.

“It was fear for my son,” she said, “envisioning every worst-case scenario, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was already in therapy, but I began using a medication called that medicine and I took it for 14 days and it made a difference.”

Professional Experiences

Jennifer Lawrence also spoke regarding the freeing requirement of completing nude scenes in the movie while she was expecting and unable to exercise.

“There’s a freedom,” she commented, about having to abandon insecurities. “Truly, I do have moments where I’m like, What separates me between my work and that profession? But it isn’t a major concern.”
