The Gruesome Animated Movie Ending That Stays With Audiences
Among every mature cartoon movies I’ve ever watched, nothing has lingered in my mind quite like the fear-filled ending of a graphically gory and overwhelingly transgressive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, the Spanish writer-director developed a grim, melancholy and often savage universe with a few small , desolate hints of optimism.
Although Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from an impulse to advance animation further, the filmmaker stated that it was actually an effort to express a widespread, cross-cultural theme concerning “the mutual source of all wars.”
This theme is conveyed through a squad of vividly colored bears , clearly modeled after a well-known series of cuddly characters.
Being raised in a society centered on aggression and the defense industry, a lot of the bears are obsessed with slaughtering unicorns, due to a sacred text that claims the bears they were once kings of the woods, before the unicorns forced them out.
A few have not completely accepted the brainwashing, , would rather try out drugs or mate outdoors.
In contrast to their friendly equivalents, these vivid animals display genitals and definite urges.
For a certain particularly cruel, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the war with unicorns transforms into a path toward dominance — and specifically to dominance above his softer, nicer brother the character Tubby.
The character behaves aggressively and an apparent sociopath , and when horror overcomes his unit and takes his comrades one by one, he grabs increasingly control personally, via progressively bloody, damaging approaches.
Simultaneously, these mythical beings are suffering their own terror, through a spreading, deadly beast in their forest.
“Initially, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the director said. “However it evolves into a more serious and sad movie. And in the finale, it’s a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars starts out resembling among the quirky films by a renowned filmmaker, that uncover a wicked pleasure in permitting drawn beings swear, engage in violence, or engage sexually.
Subsequently it turns into closer to a more grim work from the same artist, including ever more graphic violence and a tangible relation to the actual tragedy of conflict.
By the end, it becomes an outright extreme drama massacre.
