Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Aggression So Long As The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.

One snub did the trick. Another and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to know that winning the World Cup demands the involvement of the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the tactical structures and squad hierarchies essential with England now that he is returned to the manager's warm embrace.

The manager desires his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is a matter of harnessing it in the right way. Personal talent is important but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a price to pay when stardom prevails. Still, a message has been sent.

The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after being left out of last month’s squad. He watched the national side book their place at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing No 10. He listened as the coach talk about appreciating the squad's spirit and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid versus their rivals and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; leaving him out again would have put his tournament chances in serious doubt.

The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has shown him that playing for one's country is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover for the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is unafraid to make big calls.

“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German commented. “Bellingham possesses that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to reach the heights that he has. Everyone need to support him and establish a setting which he can use that intensity in matches and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham dominated the spotlight at the team news conference for this month’s final group games versus one opponent and the other. Any other news? Well, what about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious No 10 requiring coaching. Foden has not played for the national team since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but the boss was impressed by the 25-year-old after his display in his club's victory versus the German side this week.

The issue, though, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be a good argument to select Cole Palmer once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Is selecting multiple creators to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the team, restricting Harry Kane’s game in the process.

It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it disrupts the attacking balance. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles helps. He is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who must play central. Tuchel wants him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Or the other flank?’” he said. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision about him for a long time. In my view it suits him the most.”

He agreed there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly something is not right, whether it's his role, the environment, it's unclear.

“In my opinion he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a specific system, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

The manager talked about Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and the other netting goals from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his fine form for City at defense. Intrigue is high.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at using Foden as a deep-lying striker against one opponent or Albania. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives should Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is also a moment to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to net in an international match against the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo linked up for a score. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is missing.

“This is where at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” he stated. He does not shy away to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants him onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an superior one.
